Welcome to our Sixth Form!
Miss Coleman - Assistant Headteacher in charge of Sixth Form
I am delighted to welcome you to our thriving and high achieving Sixth Form at Brentford School for Girls. Young people choose us from both within the school and from other local schools because we have a strong history of academic success, and provide outstanding individual support for all of our students. The opportunities go far beyond the classroom! Our vision is to equip our students with the qualifications, skills, qualities and experiences that prospective universities and employers require, to ensure that they are equipped for a globally competitive world. In 2013, 40% of Year 13 leavers achieved A*-B grades and 65% achieved A*-B grades. Our student achievements are graded as “very good” by ALPS, which carries out an independent analysis of our results. We also have one of the highest “value add” scores compared to all other Hounslow sixth forms. We are confident that we can offer you an excellent experience.
All students who leave Brentford at the end of their studies, move onto university or employment. We have strong links with local employers and excellent links with universities, both locally and those further afield. We have a strong track record of securing places for those who choose Russell Group universities as their university of choice, including supporting students in obtaining places at Oxford and Cambridge. Our Sutton Trust programme identifies students with exceptional ability and aptitude early on in their studies, and links are made to begin the relationships with these prestigious universities from the beginning of Year 12. Students are able to take part in the Extended Project Qualification in both Year 12 and 13. Students are also encouraged to attend summer schools, master classes and university lectures to enable them to build links and get a head start within a competitive university market.
At Brentford Sixth Form, we offer a huge range of A Level and BTEC courses, as well as a specifically tailored level two pathway, for those students who still need to achieve 5 A*-C grades at GCSE. We are part of the Campus Hounslow Consortium, so we can offer up to 60 different course options. While your host school may be Brentford School for Girls, you will also be able to choose to study elsewhere in another Hounslow School, if the course that you would like to study is not offered here.
Our students benefit from the very best in specialist, first class teaching. The additional support we offer, through a very strong pastoral care team, enables our students to make excellent progress in their studies. A strong relationship between our staff and students is a key ingredient to our success. Many of our A Level classes are small and as a result of this, students receive targeted, individual support from specialist subject teachers. Students who join us, comment on the real 'family feel,' and how they feel valued, supported and very much part of the whole-school community.
The team is led by myself (Assistant Headteacher in charge of the Sixth Form), Mr Khutan (Year 12 Pupil Progress Leader) and Miss Ogunfidodo (Year 13 Pupil Progress Leader). We have a very skilled team of form tutors in both Year 12 and 13.
Sixth Form tutor groups are small, to ensure tutors are able to give our students maximum support and guidance throughout their time with us. Tutors are well trained in giving the best advice and guidance on future careers and university courses. They are able to answer all questions related to applying to university and support students through the UCAS process. The high expectations we hold for all of our students is implicit within the culture and ethos of Brentford Sixth Form. All of our tutor groups are named after Russell Group universities; Warwick, Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge, York and Kings. Students are supported by their tutors through the Tutor Time programme, to ensure that they have outstanding care and guidance. Tutor time includes a variety of activities that focus on developing our students holistically.
We successfully prepare all of our students for the globally competitive world. We expect of all our students to follow a business dress code because we know that this is what the job market requires and in addition it makes our students feel self-confident. We also have a wide range of social and enrichment activities which we expect all students to get involved with. This is to ensure that all of our students have the best opportunities available to them, which in turn will enhance their CVs and applications to university. Opportunities include a trip to a museum, art gallery, the theatre, subject specific trips and visits, the opportunity to travel abroad including trips to New York and France. Students may also choose to take part in a wide range of enrichment opportunities e.g. paired reading with a younger student, working as a teaching assistant and/or completing a range of work experience placements. All of our students are expected to take part in a teambuilding day off site, which focuses on developing our student’s confidence in mixing with new people and developing skills for effective teamwork. Our ‘Headstart’ induction day is an exciting day in July where students begin their transition from GCSE to A-Level.
At Brentford sixth form our students benefit from excellent specialist resources and facilities. We are very excited about our move to a new sixth form centre in January 2014. The centre will provide state of the art facilities where students will have the opportunity to study and socialise. Our students will be able to work independently using a dedicated sixth form computer suite and there will be a supervised private study area where students can access support from a member of the sixth form team. All students will have at least four dedicated study periods each week to facilitate outstanding progress.
Our vision is to create successful, confident and ambitious young people. As well as supporting our students to achieve academic excellence, we aim to enhance the holistic health and wellbeing of all our students. Our learning values underpin the Sixth Form ethos and culture. By developing our learning values; ambitious, courageous, confident, inquisitive, flexible and reflective, we aim to create young people who are ready for life in the future… Whatever the future may bring! Additional opportunities include a variety of leadership opportunities and these are available to all students. These include the following posts of responsibility; Head Girl, Deputy Head Girl, Senior Sixth Form Prefect, Social Committee and Prefect Team. All students have the opportunity to attend Brentford University at the end of Year 12, in order to really prepare them for the next steps in securing the very best education and career.
As you can see there are a wide range of opportunities available at Brentford Sixth Form. We are really proud of our outstanding care and guidance, which we know supports our students in achieving their potential. We look forward to meeting you at our Open Evening or on a tour. Please do not hesitate in contacting us if you have any questions or queries, as we are always here to help and support you in the next stage of your educational journey.
We look forward to meeting you.
